Unfortunately no grad school acceptances this year but I know I will likely want to apply again next year.
How does this work? Do departments care about this? Can I ask the same people for recommendation letters?

i’m in the same boat but i don’t think it should be a problem to apply again and ask the same profs. i’m planning to do so too
Don’t worry about this, you can definitely reapply. Some department may even see it as a positive since it shows you’re still very interested and persistent. As long as you have a good relationship with your letter writers, they would be happy to write them for you again (they would likely just use the same letter again).
I wouldn’t be worried about this, just make sure reapplying it’s what you want!
