40h weeks in tech

Is it common to work 40-50 hour weeks in tech? I’ve read posts about how people work crazy hours at FAANG and other companies which is freaking me out slightly. Is that the norm or just anomalies? I don’t want to kill myself and have no social life lmao

Pretty common. Depends on manager and company but if you’re smart about what you do and communicating with your manager, crazy stories you’ve heard are definitely anomalies.

People who rant and post negative things online are only the minority but it makes them feel like they’re the majority because it’s all you’re reading about.

Most people I know don’t work crazy hours in tech but there may be periods where they’re working a bit more because of the specific project
