Non finance/econ/business major breaking into finance

Hi Everyone!

Biology major here and I want to break into finance, specifically IB. People seem to struggle already being a finance or business major and I feel like I’ll have no chance. Basically I was pre-med but now in my junior year I decided I don’t want to go to med school and really want to do finance instead. A few things about me:

  • target school
  • bio major, minor in psych
  • 3.8 GPA
  • only experience is research in a lab

Has anyone broken in successfully or know someone who has? Thanks!

Hi there. As you go to a target school with a really high GPA, I actually think you have a pretty decent chance of getting an IB role. Biology majors are more common than you think and since you have a good school banks are more likely to give you opportunities. I also just want to say that IB, like many other fields, look for smart people who are willing and quick to learn. I would recommend that you demonstrate on your resume and during interviews your passion and enthusiasm for finance (obviously in ways that are not your major).
