Hi everyone. Undergrad here and I’m thinking about what field to go into. I know I really like talking to different people and from the outside maybe HR would be a good fit for me. If anyone has any suggestions or insight into a career in HR please let me know. I would love to know more about it, how to know if I would enjoy it and what kind of roles I should apply for internships/full time. Thanks a lot!
Hello! The HR field is very broad and also depends what your major/degree is. Usually getting started in the HR field involves one of the following positions which you can apply to:
- Human resources generalist.
- Recruitment specialist.
- Compensation specialist.
- Benefits specialist.
- Labor relations specialist.
- Records and information specialist.
- Position classifier.
- Training specialist.
Are you also open to doing a masters degree anytime soon?
Thanks! I’m thinking about HR generalist, do you have any advice for that? Also, do you mean like a MBA or something?
For an HR generalist, they prefer HR or business-related majors and if you’re not of that background, perhaps consider taking related classes and join groups that will help you network with people already in the field. Getting an internship on entry level position in HR would also be great, which can entail any face of HR such as payroll, training, hiring etc. There are also departments at companies that look for certifications, specifically the Society for Human Resources Management that has three certifications through its HR Certification Institute: Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), and Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR).
As for the Masters, you can definitely increase your chances or advance your career as an HR generalist by getting a masters in HR management or an MBA that has an HR component. Hope this helps!
